DO I NEED A PERMIT FOR A HOME ADDITION IN CALGARY?

DO I NEED A PERMIT FOR A HOME ADDITION IN CALGARY?

Yes. All home additions in Calgary require at least a building permit. A building permit is always required because an addition alters the structure of the home and must comply with the Alberta Building Code. Depending on the size and location of the addition, a development permit may also be required.

    Client experiences

"I wanted to have a secondary suite and the team at Permit Masters was incredibly helpful with the entire permit process. They were very professional, conducted the site visit promptly, and within a week, they had submitted my application."
“We are very grateful for the services that we received from the Permit Masters professional team. They capture all the details and provide an easy to understand structure and outline to completing the permit process.”
“We moved into a house that had renovations done to it but no building permits. We wanted to get retroactive permits, if possible, in case there was ever an issue with our home insurer such as a fire or an injury related to the renos. In the end, we got all the permits we were looking for and the file is now closed. The whole process was smooth and easy.”

Do all home additions require a development permit in Calgary?

No. A development permit is typically not required if the addition is 40 square metres or less and is located within 1.5 metres of the front façade or within 4.6 metres of the rear façade, and the addition complies with all Land Use Bylaw requirements. If the addition requires any variance to zoning rules or exceeds these limits, a development permit is required.

Yes. All home additions in Calgary always require a building permit to confirm compliance with the Alberta Building Code.

City of Calgary building permit fees are based on the size of the addition:

    • Under 400 sq ft: $333.84
    • Over 400 sq ft: $1,302.86

These fees apply to the building permit only and may change.

    • Building permit: typically about 7 days once a complete application is submitted

Timelines vary by season. Winter reviews are often faster, while spring and summer may take longer.
